Why It's Important to Photograph Senior Pets

Senior pets have shared years of loyalty, routine, and quiet companionship. As they age, their health and mobility can decline quickly, often without much warning. Taking the time to professionally photograph them isn't just about capturing how they look - it's about documenting the connection you’ve built over a lifetime.

These photos were taken on the second last day of Snowy’s life. I had been booked for a portrait session with this beautiful dog and her feline companion, Hugo. The original plan was to capture some light-hearted moments of them playing together.

But when I arrived, it was clear that Snowy was very unwell. I quietly shifted the session to focus on end-of-life images, just in case.

Sadly, Snowy was put to sleep the following day.

This session became something much more than we expected — a way to honour her life and the bond she shared with her family. It’s a reminder of how important it is to capture these moments while we still can.

These photos become a lasting record of the relationship you shared. They preserve the details that may fade from memory over time and creates something tangible to hold onto long after they’re gone. Not staged or forced, but honest and meaningful.

Because when they’re no longer with us, these images often become some of our most valued possessions.

To help celebrate senior pets I’m running a senior pet project until the end of July 2025.

For $150 your experience includes:

Hi there, my name’s Adam

I’m a pet and equine photographer based in Toogoolawah in the beautiful Brisbane Valley. I’m a former Australian Army combat engineer and I love horses and animals! I specialise in pet and equine photography because there's something amazing about capturing that special bond between an animal and a person that I can’t get enough of.

I'm passionate about animals and animal welfare and I conduct pro bono photoshoots for animal rescues across SE Qld to help those organisations by providing high quality images to tell their story.

In addition to photography, I run a small farm animal rescue with my partner and we are the carers and guardians of four horses (one off the track thoroughbred and three rescue horses), four goats, five roosters, two pigs, two cows and we’re a foster home for a farm animal rescue charity.

Frequently asked questions

Do you travel to me?

Yes! Whether it’s at your property or at another location I come to you. Travel within one hour’s drive of Toogoolawah is included in your session fee however I also travel across South East Queensland for a small additional fee which I often waive if your location is just outside my normal travel range.

What should I wear?

The golden rule is wear something that you feel comfortable in because if your clothes are making you feel uncomfortable then that will show in your photos. Avoid overly bright colours and shiny materials and if your photoshoot is with more than one person coordinate your style and colours.

Neutral and earthy colours are always a great look for something casual but if you want to dress bold and glamourous then go for it! Depending on the style of shoot you would like an outfit change can make an amazing point of difference for your photos but we can discuss this before the day.

Hats can be worn but depending on the lighting conditions I may ask you to remove the hat if there’s a harsh shadow covering your face. Bear this in mind and it’s helpful to bring a hair brush and ties to the shoot for any touch ups if necessary.

Sunglasses can be worn but again, depending on the situation I may ask that you remove them as seeing a person’s eyes helps to show connection in photos.

It’s best to keep you mobile phone out pockets for the photoshoot as they can be very obvious and distracting.

I want to book but I think that I should lose weight first?

There’s absolutely no need to lose weight before a photoshoot and this is a stressor in your life that you don’t need. Your photos will look amazing just as you are and I take great care to make sure that you feel comfortable, relaxed and feeling yourself during the shoot.

How should I prepare my horse for a photoshoot?

A well groomed horse is essential for a photoshoot. If your horse loves a bath now is a good time to give them one. Groom your horse to remove any loose hair, brush their mane, forelock and tail and trim their tail slightly if it’s looking a bit untidy. A good quality coat shine product will make them look even better but it’s not essential.

Check their hooves and remove any mud or dirt and if you choose to do so apply hoof oil or show gloss. Decide on what tack you’re going to use and give it a clean. Some horses chew excessively with a bit in their mouth so consider a comfortable halter.
